If I didn’t notice that one of my gauges was pegged in the first place, what makes you think I’m going to notice the little light that says “Check Gauges”? I’ve only owned one vehicle that had this, and it was on a Pontiac Sunbird that I had many many years ago. There was no audible warning when the light illuminated, and I would know this because I drove for 3 kilometers in a straight line before I realized my serpentine belt had snapped. It’s almost as bad as when car companies eliminated the coolant temp. gauge and replaced it with a “Too late! Your engine is cooked!” light.
Side note, whatever car the above picture is from, the gauges are backwards and I don’t like it.

The picture is from a C4 Corvette... 1990 to 1996 :)

Most other Chevys spelled it “Gages” at the time oddly.

I’d like to give an honorable mention to the “information center” that my 1994 Cougar had:
This was a single DIN module all the way down by the shifter, below the HVAC and radio. At least they didn’t put actual gauges down there *coughCamarocough*.

Yep. My cavalier had that. Always made me laugh.

I had a car with this feature, but I can’t recall which one. I also recall that it had no fuel warning light, so check gauges was some all-encompassing idiot light. Based on the comments of this feature in GM cars, I think it was my 94 Grand Prix.

To be fair, the “engine is cooked” light is just a formality. Pretty much every car from even a while ago has a gauge that straight up lies. NA Miatas have a 35°C dead zone. May as well put a light and save the weight.
I hear that once the gauge starts moving toward H on an RX-8 you’re already hosed too.

I can live with that, because the accessory gauges start on the left, and climb to the right, as they should. Unlike the C4 Corvette, whose gauges start high, while things are low, and gradually sweep down, as things go up. Just no.
